Dave Kasteler Tribute

Dave Kasteler accepted the role of Course Director for the May 2012 course.  Unfortunately, Dave lost his battle with cancer before the course began and Mike Allen graciously accepted to fill in his shoes.  This is a tribute to Dave as he watches over this course.

Dave Kasteler was born and raised in Salt Lake City. He is the husband of Lisa and father of  three wonderful children Lorin, Meaghan, and Spencer, who just received his Eagle Scout award. Dave was in the construction trade professionally and spent the past 10 or so years as the General Superintendant for Okland construction.

He was involved in scouting as a youth and for the past 18 years as an adult leader in various positions. For the past 11 years he served as Scoutmaster of Troop 1293 in Sandy, UT. Dave also served on staff for District Roundtable for several years and the past 2 years for the council in charge of facilities.

In 2004 Dave went through Woodbadge training for the first time an event as he put it " that changed his life".  Dave took what he learned and and brought it back to his troop, his district and to the council. From that point on, his passion for scouting was unmatched. He lived the oath and law and all values of scouting and brought that out in those he associated with. His enthusiasm for scouting was infectious. In 2008 Dave was awarded the Silver Beaver Award from the Great Salt Lake Council. That was an accomplishment he was very proud of. It probably meant so much to him because as a youth he missed getting his Eagle Scout award by two merit badges and a project. This is something that Dave regretted very much.

Dave always said he had his own personal definition of integrity. " I do what I say I'm going to do and I get it done when I say I'm going to get it done." Dave really lived this. This doesn't seem hard really until you realize the large number of committments Dave made to people and to the Scouting program. One of Daves committments he continually made was helping to cook for various scouting events.

Dave loved scouting and he treasured his woodbadge experience. He had a belief that a trained leader with a passion for scouting will make a difference in the lives of the young men. He had a belief that the Woodbadge Course in May 2012 would be the best ever. He had a vision for this course that the participants would  gain a passion for for scouting and more important a passion for passing on to the boys the values that scouting teaches. Dave was a friend to all who knew him. He is with us here on course.
