Mike Allen, Course Director (ScoutMaster)

Mike has been married for 35 years to his wife Kim they have 4 children three married daughters and one Eagle Scout son who is having too much fun to get married. We have 6 grand kids and another due in July. Once a year we have grandma and grandpa’s campout in back yard with all the grand kids where we set up the tent trailer, cook over an open fire, watch movies, play game and swing until grandpa can’t do underdog any more. Their parents are invited back for breakfast the next morning.

Mike has worked in all the families of scouting in his 28 plus years as a registered leader and has been the assistant to seven Scoutmasters but never the Scoutmaster himself.

Mike and Kim attended Wood Badge together in 1998 Mike is a Bobwhite and Kim a Wolf.

Paul Stewart, ASM-Facilities
Paul has lived in Utah his entire life. He currently lives in Tooele, UT. Paul's current profession is a machine operator at Detroit Diesel. He is a very active person who loves to spend time with family, and is married to the most wonderful woman who he admires with all his heart. Together they have three small children that love playing with their dad. Paul's main interest that he enjoys most is exploring the great outdoors. If he could, he would spend all of his time in the mountains learning from nature. He became involved with the Boy Scouts of America almost six years ago. Paul's greatest accomplishment in the Boy Scout program happened when he helped create a community troop for Tooele County. Scouting has offered him many wonderful opportunities. Through the Scouting program Paul believes he will change the world.

Jeff Sims, Senior Patrol Leader
Jeff became a Beaver in 2009 and was privileged to help the Owl patrol on his Dad’s course last November. He is most familiar with the Cub Scouts having been a Cubmaster and Cub Committee Chair for many years. For the past several months he has been helping the older boys as an Assistant Scoutmaster. Jeff has been involved with Roundtable for the past 2 years in Layton (Trapper Trails Council) teaching the Cub Committee break out session.  He was also involved with Cub Scouts back in the early 2000’s where he also taught the Cub Committee break out session down in Lehi (National Parks Council).  Jeff earned his Eagle as a youth in Farmington where he grew up (Great Salt Lake Council).  Jeff is married with a 13 year-old son, 10 year-old daughter, and 5-year old daughter. He is a civil engineer working for Lochner, a private consultant firm in Salt Lake City, and he primarily works on storm drain, flood control, river hydraulics, and irrigation projects. Jeff’s non-scouting passions include basketball, motorcycles, podcasts, astrophysics, and cookies.


LaDawn Tracy, Quarter Master
LaDawn was born in Salt Lake City and she has 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls, plus 1 step son.  She has 1.5 grandchildren, both boys, ages 5 and due in June.  LaDawn loves scouting.  She has worked with every family of scouting for the past 14 years, but the Cubs have her heart.  For the past 7 years she has worked at Camp Steiner.  She has planned and put on Cub Day camps.  She has been a basic training chariman for 6 years.  LaDawn went to Wood Badge in 2001 in Philmont.  This will be her 7th time on a Wood Badge staff.  She knows that Wood Badge will change your life!


Mike Stanfield, Quarter Master
Mike was born in Salt Lake City and has lived in the surrounding area since, currently in Riverton.  He has been married for 38 years and has 3 children; 1 boy and 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren.  He works as a general contractor in the Salt Lake area.

He has loved scouting since a young age when his father served as the scoutmaster when he became a scout.  He has served in scouting for 34 years.  Mike has served for the last 7 years as the Scoutmaster and Varsity coach for a special needs troop in the south valley area. He also serves as the Venturing advisor in his home unit.

Mike completed Wood Badge in 1992 and has served on staff as a troop guide in 2008


Mike Seawright, Scribe
Mike was born in Worland, Wyoming and graduated from BYU with a Bachelor’s degree and went on to the University of Utah for an MBA (he’s still a Cougar fan though).  He is married and has three adult children that currently reside in Utah.  Mike works for Intel Corporation and has enjoyed traveling around the world for his job.

Mike has not been a life-long scouter.  About 6 years ago he became the Chartered Organization Representative (COR) for his scouting unit and was thrust in the middle of it.  After a Court of Honor where no awards or merit badges were given out, he decided he better get trained to see if he could make a difference.  That’s when he decided to attend Wood Badge, which set in action a change in his life.  Mike is now a “scouter” and has helped to change his local unit, completely.  Mike is currently the Committee Chair in his unit and serves as Assistant District Commissioner.  This will be Mike’s second opportunity to serve on a Wood Badge staff.


Roger Koon, Scribe
Roger was reared in Thomaston, GA and graduated from Robert E. Lee Institute. Went to Baylor University, Waco, TX for a summer & then transferred to Tarrant County Junior College, Ft. Worth, TX. 

He enlisted in the US Army as a Russian Translator/Interpreter and Voice Intercept Operator. Served during Desert Storm with the 1457th Combat Engineer Battalion.  He has over 30 years of service in the Federal Government with USDA. 

Roger graduated from Brigham Young University, Provo, UT in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Agronomy;  

He started work with USDA, Farmers Home Administration (FmHA)  in 1980 in Richfield, UT and then Monticello, UT. He has worked in El Paso, TX, Vernal, UT & currently Salt Lake City, UT.

In 1987 he started participating on a team as a cyclist in Triathlon’s in Monticello’s Blue Mountain, which was a cross country ski, bike & run and Blanding’s Hillman in Blanding, UT, which was a swim, bike & run.  Also, as a team we participated in triathlons in 1988 & 1989.  As a team we came in 3rd place in the Hillman in 1988 and 2nd place in the Hillman in 1989 for our age group.   Also, ran in a 5K Run in Monticello & came in 1st place for his age group.

Roger was an Early Morning Seminary Teacher, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, El Paso, TX.

Volunteered for a detail to help in the aftermath of flood damage in the Red River Valley area, Redmond, MN & Sisseton, SD. Also after Hurricanes Katrina/Rita Houma/Raceland area, assigned to Long-Term Community Recovery Team (LTCR), Lafourche Parish, Raceland Disaster Recovery Center, LA.

Roger has been married for over 30 years and has five children, 3 boys & 2 girls, all of them are married, with 8 grandchildren and one on the way.

Went to Woodbadge in 1988. Has worked with the youth in coaching & refereeing soccer, baseball, softball.  Also, he has worked in the Boy Scouts of America [BSA] scouting program as an Assistant & Cub-Master, as an Assistant & Scoutmaster, Varsity Scout Coach & Explorer Leader and also has served on the District Scout Committee.  Has 2 sons that earned their Eagle Scout Award & 1 son that earned their Life Scout Award.


Mike Jueschke, Troop Guide
Mike was born in Provo, Utah and has lived in Utah most of his life.  He is currently the Assistant Scoutmaster in his home unit and the Great Salt Lake Council Wood Badge Association.  Dave Kasteler was very instrumental in helping Mike attend Wood Badge in 2009.  Dave was also a great friend and co-worker.  This is Mike’s second time on a Wood Badge staff.  His hobbies include wood working, spending time with his 2 boys (ages 6 & 4), working on home improvement projects, and skiing.

Jerry Beste, Troop Guide
Jerry went to Wood Badge in 2008.  He has served on 1 previous Wood Badge course.  He has a BS degree in business and has been a registered scout leader for 12 years, with 10 of those years serving along side Dave Kasteler in their home unit.  He is married to Lynnette and they have 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls.  Both boys are Eagle Scouts.  He currently serves as 11 year old leader assistant scout master in his home unit in Sandy, UT.  It is an honor to serve on this course to better help young men and carry on the tradition Dave has created in his home unit.



Jolene Lemmon, Troop Guide
Jolene was born in San Jose, CA and moved around a lot growing up.  Mainly grew up in Utah and Salt Lake Counties.  She is a widow with 3 boys, 1 Eagle, 1 about to receive his Life, and 1 that will receive his Arrow of Light on Feb. 1st.  She is a Personal Assistant and a housekeeper.  She is a District Trainer for Den Chiefs and the Associate Advisor for the Order of the Arrow Sage Chapter.  This will be her first time on a Wood Badge staff and she is extremely excited to be a part of the team.  She is a Beaver from 2007 course at Camp Tracy.


Jerry Monsen, Troop Guide
Jerry was born in Roosevelt, UT and lived in Altamont.  He has three children, ages 21, 19, & 17.  He is an electrical engineer where he designs chips (not potato chips).  He is currently on the Cub Round Table staff.  Previous scouting positions include Vice Chair for Scouts, Scoutmaster, Troop Committee Chairman, and Cubmaster.  He’s been on several Wood Badge staffs before with positions as Quartermaster, Scribe, and Senior Patrol Leader.  He is also the scribe for the Wood Badge Association.


Rob Thorup, Troop Guide
Rob was born at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Rob grew up in Holladay, Utah, went to Olympus High, Brigham Young University, and University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. His awesome wife, Cindy, is from Taber, Alberta and willfully supports him in all his scouting activities. It creates “girls night out” which she often enjoys.

Rob has seven children that he knows of: Whitney, 25, married living in North Dakota; Michael, 22, at Utah State in Biology and Pre-Dental; Christian, United States Marine stationed at Camp Pendelton, California; Amanda, Senior at Bingham High School; Noah, Junior at Bingham High School; Blake, 8th grade at South Jordan Middle School: and Tessa who resides with our Heavenly Father.

Rob has been a full-time Dentist since 1989. He’s also a full-time scouter, part time bounty hunter, and dental technology developer.

Rob currently is a Scoutmaster, District Venturing Commissioner, District Venturing Round Table Commissioner, and NRA Instructor, and does not do winter camps.  Rob went to Wood Badge in March 2009 at the Snyderville “Hilton” Lodge in Park City. He had a superb experience!


Paula Hardy, Troop Guide
Paula was born in Arcadia, California and has been married to Mitch Hardy for 24 ½ years.  She has 3 children, Trent who is currently serving a mission in El Salvador Santa Ana/Belize and is due home June 19, 2012 (yes, she can’t wait)  Ryan, a daughter, is a Junior at Southern Utah University majoring in Communications.  Colin is a Junior at Bingham High, he is our baby and we can't believe we will soon be entering the next chapters of our lives.

Paula is a teacher and has taught for 10 years in Southern California, but when we moved to Utah in 2000 I told Mitch "I'm done raising other people's children!"  So I keep my license current and enjoy being a substitute teacher.

Paula is involved in scouts over the past 20 years.  Just not consecutively.  Assistant Den Leader, Wolf/Bear Leader and 11 yr. old Scout Leader.   I am currently in the RS pres.  thus not holding a scouting position other than Wood Badge.  Paula attended Wood Badge in May 2008,  and received her beads when her son earned his Eagle.  Was on staff in November 2011 (with Mike Allen and Jeff Sims)


Scott Allen, Troop Guide
Scott was born in Salt Lake City. Later he met someone who was able to put up with some oddities that he has and she decided to make out partnership a permanent position. Scott likes fruit and was taught about multiplication in school, so somehow he ended up with 9 children.

Scott replaces body parts for his profession so hopefully no one will need his services.  He loves scouting and has been in the scouts, varsity, committee, and district.  He is currently the varsity coach in his unit and district venturing round table commissioner.

Scott had a life changing event take place in 2010 which was Wood Badge.  This is his first time as a troop guide and he is so excited to be part of this Wood Badge course.  His hobbies are scouting and then he enjoys water sports, scuba, and his wife says his first love is a small 570 gallon salt water fish tank in his basement.


Abe Young, Troop Guide
Abe grew up in Utah’s Dixie.  He earned his Eagle award under Scoutmaster Doug McKnight and named his second son in his honor.  Abe is married to Diane and they have two sons (both Eagles) and one daughter.  He is the Director of Auditing for Church Education.  Abe attended Wood Badge in 2009.  He is the Scoutmaster of Troop 1613.  Abe loves being outdoors.  He has been on the Board of Southeast Valley Baseball for 11 years.



Clay Hiatt, Mentor
Born and raised in Springville Utah.  Married to Lynda who does amazing quilting and machne embroidery work.  I attended Wood Badge at Philmont in 2001 and served on staff for 5 previous courses including being a course director in 2007.  Lynda and I have five children and ten  grandchildren.  My three sons are Eagle scouts and each is married.  My two beautiful daughters are still single.  I have served in every family of scouting except cubs over the past 30 years.  I am currently serving as the assistant scoutmaster.  The scoutmaster is one of my former scouts.  Lynda and I both graduated from BYU and I received a Masters in Public Administration from the U of U.  I enjoy Dutch oven cooking.
